We’ve focused a lot on growth and goals around here lately, and for many FoodTruckrs, the ultimate business goal is to expand their empire by opening another truck or a brick and mortar location. Taking on another truck or a physical location is a huge decision, and it’s one that requires a lot of research, number-crunching, and soul-searching. In today’s all-new lesson, we’ll lead you through that process and help you determine whether or not an expansion is right for you.

A ton of food truck owners probably don’t like to market/advertise, and they want to sell their food more organically, if you will. However, in this day and age, owners have to market/advertise their services if they plan on taking their businesses to the next level. Not only that, but thanks to social media, marketing your truck won’t cost a fortune.

Above all else, as long as you are cooking great food, crushing the social media game and making quality customer service a top priority, then you should have a thriving business on your hands. Of course, sometimes that isn’t enough, because ingredients like competition, location and things of that nature also come into play when it comes to a thriving business.

Knowing whom to meet is one thing. Actually meeting them in a positive and natural way is another. So, how should you meet event professionals? You could cold-call them, which is just as fun as dipping your hand in the deep fryer. Instead, go to where they gather: association meetings.

A successful food truck owner is typically good in the business department and at cooking. However, there are also many other ingredients when it comes to being a successful business owner in this industry, such as managing and leading your employees.

We recommend taking a similar approach to the research you did back then by starting out with local government offices like your city’s Small Business Administration, Health Department, and Chamber of Commerce. You should also contact your local food truck associations, as many of these organizations will also provide information on catering services for food truck owners (or will have experienced members who can help you along the way). You can also see if your city has a local chapter of caterers who may be able to provide you with resources on getting started or recommend some business options for you to consider.

The million dollar question: How can a food truck owner add more streams of income? Simple. By adding catering gigs into the mix. These catering gigs will lead to you gaining a large chunk of money in the short-term. Plus, you will be getting your name out there, and you could also land more catering gigs if you really rock your current catering gig. Food truck owners can also go to food truck events.

When you first entered this industry, you might have thought the only skills you needed revolved around cooking, making menus and serving customers, but that is just the beginning. You are a business owner, so you have to take on owner-like responsibilities and make owner-like investments. Nowadays, that includes social media/digital marketing, bringing on the right talent for your team, being an all-star boss and the list of must-have qualities goes on and on. Needless to say, you have to be an expert in many different fields to find massive success in this industry.

This is one of the easiest ways to gain more money at your food truck, because it can lead to a great deal of money in just one day’s worth of work. With that in mind, landing catering gig clients is likely easier said than done, but like with all things in life, the more you practice it, the easier it will become.

This person will, ideally, take over your social media and marketing efforts. Not only will your business be able to keep your fans and followers engaged in the process, but these efforts will lead to more people coming to your food truck. This expert could already be on your team, or it might end up being an outside hire. Nonetheless, if another hire is in your budget … this hire will take your business to the next level.

You may make most of your money serving the downtown lunch rush on the daily, but there are few better ways to bring in a quick pile of cash than by serving at an event or festival. However, events require advance planning—oftentimes months ahead of time. You can’t simply show up and park on a weekend when the rest of your schedule is looking a little sparse. Instead, you’ll need to begin looking for events to serve at as soon as they’re announced (and sometimes even before) and spend time filling out applications, setting aside application fees, and promoting your truck to event organizers.

Everyone wants more customers, and everyone wants to increase their sales, but so many people just say they want those things, and then they back that up by going through the motions/not taking action. We understand, though, because food truck owners literally work 10-plus hours a day, and it’s always go, go, go with them. Breaks and vacations are few and far between.

Just as you wrote a food truck business plan when you were first learning how to start a food truck, you also need to actively continue planning the future of your business once you’re running a food truck. You’ve come so far already—but without setting more goals and finding new things to work on, you’ll quickly find your truck stagnating and failing to evolve. Goals keep you motivated to improve, hold you accountable to yourself and what matters most to you, and keep you more focused on achieving your dreams.
