FoodTruckr Heroes: The Crème Brûlée Cart

This week’s FoodTruckr Hero is truly doing some honorable work: fostering a sense of community through good old-fashioned dessert. The Crème Brûlée Cart, started by Curtis Kimball in 2009, has spent the last five years serving up incredible gourmet sweets to fans all across the San Francisco area. These FoodTruckrs have even expanded to a permanent brick and mortar location in order to spread the sugary goodness to even more fans—and today, we’re excited to share their success with you.

We’ve written before about how important it is to clearly define your brand, and The Crème Brûlée Cart has done this well. Check out the top three lessons you can learn from this experienced truck:

1. Keep Things Simple

The menu is simple at The Crème Brûlée Cart—sweet, creamy custards topped with rich, caramelized toppings that offset one another perfectly. Though there are plenty of ways to customize your crème brûlée, and plenty of perfectly paired recipe options available, the concept is no-nonsense. When fans come to the crème brûlée cart, they know exactly what to expect—yet there are still plenty of ways for their tastebuds to be delighted and surprised. Bring on the bourbon butterscotch sauce and Nutella cornflakes.

2. Give People What They Want

These FoodTruckrs know that San Francisco fans love their crème brûlée—and they’ve given them plenty of places to find it. With a brick and mortar spot in The Mission District and regular truck stops around the area in locations like Berkeley, El Cerrito, and Oakland, it’s not hard to make crème brûlée a regular part of your weekly routine. Best of all, the locations are always easy to find on their website and Twitter page.

3. Have Fun with Your Truck

Most importantly, The Crème Brûlée Cart knows how to have fun, and their fans (and everyone here at FoodTruckr!) love them for it. We would follow them on Twitter just for the tasty dessert photos alone, but the fact that they also update their feed regularly with behind-the-scenes photos of their team members and pictures of their smiling, happy fans is just an extra treat! Food truck fans are engaged, connected people who want the opportunity to get to know the hearts and minds behind their favorite truck windows. Sharing a look at who you really are and being unafraid to show how much fun you’re having helps you connect with customers and build lasting relationships that are as sweet as chocolate cookie crumbles.

No matter where you’re at in your food truck business, there are definitely plenty of things you can learn from awesome FoodTruckrs like The Crème Brûlée Cart! Keep up the great work, guys—we can’t wait to see where your business goes next.
